I’m taking a workshop on creating academic posters and it’s been very helpful in addressing many of my questions. Some issues I’m still thinking about are how to minimize the blocks of text on the poster without trivializing the reserach, and how best to represent the study in a format that is so visual. One thing that many people seem to do (and I include myself in this category) is to neglect to include enough white space in their poster – we seem to want to jam in as much as possible! There are a ton of freely available resources out there. This list should get you started:
Creating Effective Poster Presentations: An Effective Poster
PowerPoint templates to use as a starting point for your poster
There are a couple of flickr groups where you can view examples of research posters and join in discussion boards. You can also post your poster for feedback from others if you’d like. Check out the groups Poster sessions and Pimp My Poster.
